Sonya’s serious dance career started at the age of 17, when she began studying contemporary dance at Cégep de St-Laurent. After two years of college, she left Montreal and moved to Hamilton to work with the McMaster Dance Company for a year.When she returned to Montreal, she discovered Salsa in the Old Port, and began training under Caroline Paré. Sonya has since pursued many courses over the years in different genres. She was later accepted as one of fifty international students to the 2010 STSI program at the Broadway Dance Center in New York. Sonya’s dance training spans many genres, including hip-hop, jazz, ballet, musical theatre, wacking, voguing, popping, locking, breaking, and more! She has also danced in TV shows on CBC, been featured in a commercial for Tangent, and danced for the opening of the Outgames at the Olympic Stadium.Sonya’s greatest dance passion is West Coast Swing. She and partner Stéphane Dominguez have won several WCS titles in the Strictly and Rising Star categories. Sonya also regularly places in Jack’n’Jill competitions. In addition to being named the Canadian West Coast Swing Champions in 2012 with Stéphane, she is one of the first All-Star dancers in Canada (and the first in Quebec). She is certified to teach WCS with PIDA. Sonya has been teaching group and private WCS classes since 2007.
